Decks and Fences
Repairs, full tear-outs and rebuilds, and new builds — priced in writing before we start.
Geoff's Fix It builds and repairs decks, porches, stairs and railings, privacy and shadowbox fence, and gates in Springfield and the towns around it. The owner is on every job, our rates are published, and estimates are free and in writing.
Repairs, priced by the job
Three rotten boards, a railing that moves, a gate that won't latch, a post that's given up — those are repairs, and we price them like repairs. Every visit has a $130 minimum that covers the first hour of labor. Materials are billed separately.
The prices below are rough starting figures, not a promise. Send photos and we'll narrow it down; if the job needs a look in person, we'll come out. Either way you get a firm number in writing before any work starts.
Decks and porches
- Deck board replacement — about $65 per board
- Deck railing, built and installed — about $225 per six-foot section
- Deck stairs — about $190 per step (railing separate)
- Deck landing and platform frame repairs — about $975 per 40 sq ft section
- Deck and porch wash and re-stain — about $450 per 130 sq ft
- Deck and porch skirting, fabricated and installed — about $210 per 130 sq ft
- Porch columns and support posts — about $140 per pillar, removed and replaced with temporary support in place
Fences and gates
- Fence post removal and replacement — about $300 per cemented post
- Gate assembled and hung, with hardware — about $210 per gate door
- Gate rehanging and adjustment for gates that drag, sag or won't latch
- Rail, picket and panel replacement on privacy and shadowbox fence
- Mailbox post removal and replacement — about $300 per cemented post
These assume standard residential conditions; the final quote depends on scope, site and materials. The full list is on our Pricing page. Rotted siding is on our Siding page, and window sills, casing and exterior trim are on our Trim and Casing page.
When a repair isn't the right answer
We'll say so. If the framing under a deck is gone, or most of a fence's posts have rotted off at the ground, patching costs more than it saves. When that's what we find, we'll show you what we're seeing and quote the rebuild.

Double drive gate — rebuilt with new frames and hardware
Privacy fence — posts reset and new bottom rails

Repairs, full tear-outs and rebuilds, and new builds
Decks, porches, stairs and railings — repaired, rebuilt on the existing footprint, or built new. On every build:
- Stairs and railings built to code, solid underfoot and solid in hand.
- Your choice of surface, quoted in however many ways you want to see on the same frame: 5/4 pressure-treated, 2x6 pressure-treated, 5/4 Cedar, 2x6 Cedar, or composite.
- Pressure-treated wood, explained up front. Some checking and cupping as it dries is normal.
- Staining scheduled as its own visit, once the new wood has dried enough to hold it.
Porches too: tongue-and-groove porch flooring, column and post replacement, and skirting fabricated to fit.
Fences and gates
Privacy, shadowbox and horizontal-board fence on wood or steel posts set in concrete, with three rails, pickets cut level along the top, and coated or stainless fasteners throughout. Gates are built on adjustable steel frames or fabricated to fit — single walk gates and double drive gates.
Fence pricing is driven by post count and footage. As a rough guide, posts run about $300 each set in concrete — not a promise until we've seen the run. Send photos or have us out, and the written estimate shows labor, materials, hardware and disposal as separate lines.
How it works
- Text photos to (217) 279-6020 or use the estimate form.
- You get a free written estimate, with labor and materials as separate lines.
- Jobs run Sundays and Mondays, with the owner on site.
- Text or email is easiest — you'll hear back from Geoff directly.
Staining and sealing needs warm, dry weather and books up in late summer. Repairs and builds run well into the fall.
